A character can tear through routine fights in Diablo 4 and still get flattened the moment a late-game boss lands a heavy physical hit. That's why defensive planning matters as much as output. When you're comparing D4 items, it helps to look beyond the obvious offensive rolls and ask what actually keeps you alive. Toughness gives a quick snapshot, but it mostly reflects effects that are always on. Armor is a major part of that picture. Flat armor from equipment, Strength, and direct armor affixes is added first, then increased-armor effects apply to that total. It sounds simple on paper, yet it's easy to overinvest once each extra point is doing less work than the last.

Armor and resistance targets

Armor handles physical hits and physical damage over time, so it's usually the first defensive number players notice after a rough run. Still, chasing armor alone won't solve every problem. Elemental resistance needs its own attention, especially in content full of fire, poison, lightning, cold, or shadow effects. Jewelry implicits, Intelligence, gear affixes, elixirs, and Paragon bonuses can all raise resistance. Like armor, resistance gains taper off as you get closer to the upper end. The character sheet may show a sturdy Toughness number, yet one weak elemental defence can make a dungeon feel far more dangerous than expected.

Check physical protection before pushing difficult melee encounters.
Bring each elemental resistance up instead of leaving one far behind.
Compare defensive changes against the damage types that actually defeat you.

Life is only the starting point

Effective Health Pool is the more useful idea. It describes how much incoming damage your character can absorb before falling, not just the life number on screen. In Vessel of Hatred, flat life from gear joins your base life, while percentage maximum-life bonuses are collected into one additive group before they affect that total. Barriers then sit on top of life and take hits first. Damage Reduction adds another layer, but separate sources work one after another rather than joining into one big percentage. For example, fifty percent reduction followed by twenty percent reduction leaves forty percent of the original hit. That's why several modest defensive effects can feel better than one stat pushed too far.

Test the build in real fights

Conditional effects deserve attention even when Toughness ignores them. Reduction against close enemies, protection while fortified, dodge, or effects tied to crowd control may not raise the sheet value, but they can change whether a dangerous pull is survivable. Try swapping one affix at a time, then test the same activity again. A spreadsheet can help, though your actual deaths tell the clearer story. Before choosing D4 items buy options, check whether you need more life, a missing resistance, or another source of reduction for the encounters you're running.
